Lilly Professional Apprenticeship Program
Oluwaseun Ijimakinde said his journey to the Indianapolis Urban League (IUL) was in fact “divine”.
In 2019 Ijimakinde worked part-time as a hospital mailroom specialist and wanted to find a more suitable and unique job. One day he happened to be delivering a package to the credit union located inside in IUL headquarters, and saw “a bunch of people” in the lobby and quickly realized he was in the right place to find what he was looking for. Ijimakinde spoke to a staff member and learned about employment resources and opportunities offered within the IUL programs.
Although Ijimakinde was employed part-time, he was eager to receive assistance with finding full-time employment so he could become self-sufficient. He decided to enroll in IUL’s Professional Advantage Program in March 2019, where he learned intensive job readiness skills. “That class really helped a lot”, Ijimakinde stated.
In January 2021, Ijimakinde received an email informing him of a great opportunity to advance his career. He was deemed eligible to apply for a professional apprenticeship, which could potentially lead to full-time employment with Eli Lilly and Company. With his interest well peeked, he decided to pursue the opportunity. In addition to receiving support with revising his resume and creating a cover letter, Ijimakinde received access to workshops and videos to guide him through the interviewing process. Utilizing techniques he learned from the Professional Advantage Program and the apprenticeship preparatory workshops, Ijimakinde researched the available positions in the program and applied. The next step was for the prestigious company to choose him from hundreds of applicants. After moving the process of extensive and very selective screenings and virtual interviews, Ijimakinde secured the Pharmaceutical Project Management Apprentice role at Eli Lilly & Company. His new journey with Eli Lilly and Company started on April 19, 2021. He has expressed his gratitude to the IUL, stating that “The program at IUL positioned me for the opportunity at Eli Lilly and prepared me for the Pharmaceutical Project Management Apprenticeship in the best way possible.”
Ijimakinde was able to find a position that is suitable, unique, and compensates him for the skills, certifications, and experience he possesses.
We all have gone through a lot of trials and tribulations in 2020 and 2021. At the Indianapolis Urban League, we strive to uplift those in the community despite these issues in any way we can, and Oluwaseun Ijimakinde is a perfect example.
