Director of Health and Wellness
LaRona Dixon comes to the Indianapolis Urban League from the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis where she served as a Wellness Director for the last two and a half years. As part of the core leadership staff of the Avondale Meadows YMCA, “Rona” was instrumental in the 2013 opening of the newest center centrally located in the Meadows community. The 70,000 foot Health and Wellness center was specifically designed as a Purpose Built Community project with state of the art fitness equipment and health education programs that have been transformative for the neighborhood and for the broader Indianapolis community.
Rona brings with her training and education from Vincennes University and IUPUI and has 15 years of experience in health promotions and community health. She recently served as the YMCA Institutional Chair for the health and wellness action team of the Northeast Corridor Quality of Life Plan, managed several community gardens and was director and co-grant writer for the Family Cooking, Activities and Nutrition (C.A.N.) program, a mobile family cooking experience funded through UNEC and the Health Foundation of Greater Indianapolis. She is a trained Y-USA Diabetes Prevention Program Lifestyle Coach and Top 10 by 2025 Center Champion, and has established comprehensive health services through programs such as IU Health’s Program Active and the MDWise Wellness Referral programs.
Rona is also an experienced Youth Educator in academic enrichment, health and dance and has worked with many different Indianapolis schools in these areas. In her spare time Rona enjoys teaching classes as a certified Zumba instructor and Pound Pro, traveling, learning about new cultures, and enjoying time with friends.
